GCS looks to clinch district title

By DAVID CLAYBOURN
Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE They’ve already locked up a playoff spot.

The 8-1 Greenville Christian School Eagles will go after the undisputed district six-man football title at 2 p.m. today at Eagle State against 4-4 Rockwall Heritage.

GCS is alone in first place in the TAPPS Division I District standings at 2-0 following last week’s 30-28 victory over Dallas Covenant.

Rockwall Heritage is tied for second with Dallas Covenant at 1-1 and can cause a three-way tie for the district championship with a victory.

“We’ve got to be ready for them,” said GCS coach Larry Uland.

GCS moved up to No. 1 in the sixmanfootball.com rankings with the victory over Covenant. GCS had been No. 2.

GCS finished with 302 yards of total offense in that victory, including 191 yards passing from Jake Schumann, who was 10-of-21 passing for three touchdowns. Schumann’s touchdown passes covered four yards to Nick Nelson, 48 yards to Andrew Wombaker and 41 yards to Nelson.

Schumann also returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown.

Tanner Barnes led the Eagle rushers in that game with 97 yards on 23 carries.

Heritage’s players to watch include quarterback Nathan Mateer, placekicker Aaron Mateer and running back Austin Pettitt.
