Three area teams eye second-round wins

Farmersville’s volleyball playoff run ended on Thursday night.

Three more area teams hope they can get past the second round of the state playoffs as they compete in area playoffs.

Farmersville, in its fourth straight year in the playoffs, lost 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 to No. 25 state-ranked Pleasant Grove of Texarkana in a Class 3A area playoff on Thursday night in Gilmer.

Farmersville, which finished second to No. 1 state-ranked Lucas Lovejoy in District 13-3A, opened the playoffs with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-11 bi-district win over Mineola, the third-place team from 14-A.

Commerce, which earned a first-round bye with the District 10-3A title, opens the playoffs at 7 tonight in Sachse against Kennedale. Kennedale, the third-place finisher in 12-3A, downed 11-3A runner-up Fort Worth Castleberry, 25-17, 26-24, 25-18, in the bi-district round. Commerce is No. 10 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s latest 3A state rankings.

Rains, which earned a bye in the area round of the 3A playoffs, will take on No. 1 Lucas Lovejoy in the regional quarterfinals next week after Lovejoy beat Atlanta, 25-14, 25-22, 25-12, in the area round. Rains, which was third in 13-3A behind Lovejoy and Farmersville, won its bi-district match over Wills Point, 25-14, 25-19, 25-22.

Caddo Mills, ranked No. 22 in Class 2A, takes on No. 18 Crawford at 7 tonight in Corsicana. Caddo Mills, second to Quitman in District 13-2A, won its bi-district match over Malakoff, 25-18, 11-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-6.

Crawford earned a first-round bye with its District 16-2A title.

Cumby, the No. 9 team in Class A, takes on Big Sandy at 7 tonight in an area playoff at Rains High School in Emory. Big Sandy won its bi-district match over Leverett’s Chapel in five sets.

Kennedale vs. Commerce, 7 p.m., Sachse.

Pleasant Grove def. Farmersville, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23.

Rains bye.

Class 2A area playoffs

Caddo Mills vs. Crawford, 7 p.m., Corsicana.

Class A area playoffs

Big Sandy vs. Cumby, 7 p.m., Rains High School, Emory.
