Three area teams begin playoff quests

It’s playoff time tonight for three area high school volleyball teams while two others earned byes with their district championships.
Rains, the third-place finisher in District 13-3A, will take on 14-3A runner-up Wills Point at 7 tonight at Greenville High School.
Chelsee Hudson, who was the blocker of the year in District 13-3A last year and Torie Talkington, are back to lead Rains against a Wills Point team that is traditionally strong.
Commerce, the District 10-3A champion, earned a bye and is waiting on the winner of the bi-district match between Fort Worth Castleberry of District 11-3A and Kennedale from 12-3A. Commerce is ranked 10th in Class 3A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Farmersville, runner-up to No. 1 state-ranked Lucas Lovejoy in 13-3A, took on Mineola, the third-place finisher from 14-3A in a bi-district battle on Monday night in Wills Point. Farmersville, which went 7-3 in district play, earned its fourth straight playoff berth.
No. 23 state-ranked Caddo Mills, runner-up to No. 9 Quitman in District 13-2A, will take on Malakoff at 7 tonight in Kaufman. Malakoff finished third in 14-2A.
Caddo Mills, 29-12 for the season, wrapped up District 13-2A play last Tuesday with a 25-21, 28-26, 25-17 victory over Grand Saline.
Breann Whitaker led the Lady Foxes in that match with 12 kills and 19 assists.
Hannah Horton managed 10 kills for Caddo Mills and Rhyn Smith led the Lady Foxes’ defense with 28 digs.
Lone Oak, which finished third behind Quitman and Caddo Mills in 13-2A, will face Edgewood at 6 tonight at Grand Saline. Edgewood finished second in 14-2A behind Sunnyvale.
Lone Oak secured third place by beating Grand Saline, 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-15, in a special playoff on Saturday in Emory.
Melanie Brand led Lone Oak with nine kills in that match.
Ashton Hale led the Lady Buffs’ defense with 18 digs.
Chelsea Lyday added 15 digs and a team-high 13 blocks.
Ashton Hale set for 25 assists.
Cumby, the District 18-A champion, awaits the winner between Big Sandy and Leverett’s Chapel in the second round of the playoffs.
Cumby prepared for its playoff match by beating Caddo Mills, 25-15, 25-16, 16-25, 20-25, 15-11 in a warmup match on Saturday.

Bi-district — Famersville vs. Mineola, 7 p.m. Monday, Wills Point.
Bi-district — Rains vs. Wills Point, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Greenville High School.

Bi-district — Lone Oak vs. Edgewood, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Grand Saline.
