Bland sweeps boys divisions at cross country meet

LINDSAY — Bland’s Tigers swept all three of the boys divisions at the District 17-A cross country meet recently at Lindsay High School.

Led by Bryan Benedict’s third-place finish in the 5,000 meters, the Tigers captured the varsity boys division with their team total of 28. Trenton was second with 53, followed by Blue Ridge (72) and Cumby (80). Benedict clocked a time of 18 minutes, 22.66 seconds. Zach Denison of Era won with an 18:13.98 time. Alex Meyer from Trenton was second at 18:22.04.

Tyler Gordon of Bland was also seventh (19:48.63), followed by teammate Matt Salazar (eighth, 19:51.04), Christian Aviles (11th, 20:15.45), Cory Shinn (12th, 20:20.76), Dakota Villa (13th, 20:22.20) and Tomas Larios (17th, 20:59.86).

Zach Johnson, Josh Perkins and Matt Morquecho of Bland also went one-two-three to lead Bland’s junior varsity boys to the team championship.

Juan Aviles’ fifth-place finish helped the Bland junior high boys to their team championship.

Kelsey Hermes won the 3,200-meter race in 13:02.91 to help Lindsay to the varsity girls team title with 25 points. Muenster was second, followed by Era, Bland, Celeste and Blue Ridge.

Era took the junior varsity girls and junior high girls team championships.

The top three teams and top 10 individual finishers will advance to the Region III-A meet in Houston on Saturday.
