GREENVILLE Greenville Christian School celebrated homecoming and opened district play with a 56-6 pasting of Dallas Lakehill in six-man football on Saturday.

The Eagles overcame four turnovers on a mushy field to roll up 388 yards, including 266 yards rushing.

Tanner Barnes, who switched back and forth from center to running back, rushed for 167 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Barnes scored on bursts of 43, 49 and 6 yards and also caught a 24-yard pass.

Quarterback Jake Schumann went 4-of-9 passing for 122 yards, including scoring throws of 49 yards to Evan Hawthorne and 33 yards to Kelton Pitts. Schumann topped the 2,000-yard passing mark for the season.

Schumann also ran for a 38-yard touchdown to end the game with 2:57 remaining via the 45-point mercy rule.

Hawthorne also dashed for a 49-yard touchdown run to finish with 63 yards on just three carries.

Andrew Wombaker also ran eight yards for a touchdown.

Nick Nelson, who had a 16-yard reception, went 3-of-5 on conversion kicks.

The Eagles also picked up conversions on passes from Schumann to Barnes and Robert Hargrove.

The GCS defense, led by Wombaker, kept the pressure on Lakehill to hold the Warriors to only 10 yards rushing on 29 carries. GCS registered 13 tackles for losses.

“Our defense has been strong,” said GCS coach Larry Uland. “I think we’re getting better. That’s our goal.”

Lakehill passed for 203 yards to wind up with 213 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Mac Kelly was 9-of-18 passing for 186 yards, including an 11-yard pass to center Beau Bunger in the third quarter for the Warriors’ only touchdown.

The GCS defense forced four turnovers as Schumann intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. Nelson and A.J. Uland also intercepted passes.

GCS fumbled five times, losing three, and also tossed an interception.

“The field is deceptively wet out there,” said Uland. “The ball’s slick.”

GCS worked on its rushing game this week.

“We needed practice running the ball,” said Uland.

The Eagles’ victory set up a showdown with No. 1 state-ranked Dallas Covenant for the TAPPS Division I District 2 lead at 1 p.m. Saturday at Covenant. GCS is ranked No. 2 among the TAPPS Division I teams by sixmanfootball.com().

Covenant is 2-0 in district play after blanking Rockwall Heritage 52-0 on Friday night.
