Lions linebacker to miss next game

By DAVID CLAYBOURN
Herald-Banner Staff

Greenville’s all-district linebacker Tristian Farley will miss the Lions’ game at Richardson Pearce on Friday after suffering an injury in the Lions’ 42-16 football victory over R.L. Turner.

That’s the word from Greenville coach Jim Phillips after Farley suffered a slight concussion and a neck sprain following a collision on the field.

The game was delayed for about 20 minutes while Farley was attended to on the field and was taken off on a stretcher. Farley left the Standridge Stadium in an ambulance and was taken to a hospital.

Greenville defensive back Ladarien Green was also injured in the same collision but returned to the game.

Greenville exploded for four touchdowns in the third quarter to break up what had been a close game. The Lions led only 7-3 at halftime against an R.L. Turner team that is winless for the season.

“The first half was terrible,” said Phillips. “We played the third quarter. That was about the only quarter we played.”

Greenville lost three fumbles and two interceptions.

“We’ve got to quit turning the ball over,” said Phillips.

Greenville quarterback Alton Dennis rushed for 106 yards on 13 carries, scoring on runs of 16 and 10 yards to pass the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season. Dennis now has 1,050 yards rushing for the season and 2,008 yards rushing for his three-year varsity career.

Running back Dakieston Williams ran for 53 yards on 10 carries, scoring on a 10-yard burst. Williams now has 561 yards rushing for the season and 2,015 yards for his three-year varsity career.

Wide receiver Devonte Green led the Lions with seven catches for 93 yards.

Dijoun Sheppard caught two passes for 28 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass from Dennis.

Wide receiver Jarvis Bruner caught a 95-yard touchdown pass from reserve quarterback Jeffro Davis. It was the Lions’ longest scoring play of the season.

Greenville improved to 5-3 for the season and 2-3 in district play.

R.L. Turner is 0-8 and 0-5.
