GCS to celebrate homecoming, district opener

By DAVID CLAYBOURN

GREENVILLE Greenville Christian School’s Eagles will celebrate homecoming today and open district play as they entertain Dallas Lakehill today.

The six-man football game kicks off at 2 p.m. at Eagle Field.

GCS should be well-rested after enjoying an open date last week.

The No. 2 state-ranked Eagles are 6-1 for the season including a 60-32 victory over Amarillo San Jacinto, which is ranked No. 1 among the state’s independent six-man teams by sixmanfootball.com. GCS is ranked second to Dallas Covenant in sixmanfootball.com’s rankings for TAPPS Division I.

Lakehill is 6-2 overall after falling 60-15 to Rockwall Heritage in last week’s district opener.

GCS coach Larry Uland said Lakehill’s Warriors are improved from last season though they’ve had a tough time replacing a talented quarterback lost to graduation.

“They’ve come a long way since last year,” he said.

GCS will look to returning all-state seniors Jake Schumann and Tanner Barnes for leadership.

Schumann is 100-of-164 passing for 1,970 yards, 40 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Barnes has caught 22 passes for 411 yards and 10 touchdowns and has rushed for 752 yards and 20 touchdowns on 67 carries.

Andrew Wombaker has caught 29 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns and Nick Nelson has 28 catches for 609 yards and six scores.
