GCS claims 'hard-fought ball game'

Herald-Banner Staff

BYERS No. 2 state-ranked Greenville Christian School outscored No. 1 Amarillo San Jacinto 60-32 in six-man football on Saturday.

GCS, now 6-1 for the season, is ranked No. 2 in TAPPS Division I by sixmanfootball.com, which rates San Jacinto first among the independents. San Jacinto fell to 4-2.

“It was a good, hard-fought ball game,” said GCS coach Larry Uland. “A tough ball game. Lots of strong hitting. They came to play, I’ll tell you that.”

GCS outscored the Patriots by a 4-1 margin in touchdowns in the second half.

“Our kids played very, very hard,” said Uland. “We had a lot of adversity this weekend with sickness and exams. I was really pleased with them for that.”

GCS passer Jake Schumann went 11-of-20 for 206 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

Andrew Wombaker ran nine times for 144 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 59 yards and one TD.

Tanner Barnes ran 19 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

Nick Nelson led the GCS receivers with three catches for 76 yards and one touchdown, was 6-of-6 on conversion kicks and intercepted a pass.

Robert Hargrove caught a 42-yard touchdown pass and Jake Thomas caught a 25-yard pass.

Thomas and Kelton Pitts both blocked extra point kicks.

Uland said the Eagles did a goob job of shutting down the Patriots’ speedy running back Derrek Ruthardt.
