GCS to wrap up homestand

GREENVILLE Greenville Christian School will wrap up a three-game homestand when the Eagles entertain the Kopperl Eagles at 2 p.m. today in six-man football.

GCS started the homestand on Sept. 5 with a 99-68 loss to Trinidad and then bounced back last week to beat Leverett’s Chapel 62-22.

The GCS Eagles’ next three games are scheduled for the road. They’ll play at Happy Hill in Granbury on Sept. 26, at Avalon on Oct. 3 and at Byers on Oct. 10 against Amarillo San Jacinto.

GCS quarterback Jake Schumann was 17-of-35 for 335 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s victory. Schumann is 48-of-81 for the season for 1,037 yards and 17 touchdowns. He’s only thrown three interceptions.

Nick Nelson leads the GCS receivers with 14 catches for 286 yards. Tanner Barnes has caught 10 passes for 205 yards and four touchdowns. Andrew Wombaker’s caught eight for 193 yards.

Barnes leads the Eagle rushers with 384 yards on 25 carries.

Kopperl is averaging 43 points per game. The visiting Lions blanked Jonesboro 46-0 last week after falling 78-42 and 66-42 to Penelope and Walnut Springs in their first two games.

“They’re big and they’re fast,” said GCS coach Larry Uland. “They’re experienced. They’ve got a new coach and he’s inserted some lift into them that they didn’t have last year.”
