Cumby returns to winning ways; beats Union Hill

By DAVID CLAYBOURN
Herald-Banner Staff

CUMBY After their football stadium got a new name, the Cumby Trojans returned to their winning ways with a 49-20 pasting of the Union Hill Bulldogs on Saturday at Frazier-Lawrence Field.

The Trojans squared their season record at 1-1, the same mark for Union Hill, which beat Fruitvale 21-8 last week in a game called at halftime because of lightning.

Michael Morris took over full-time quarterback duties for the Trojans in place of the injured Timmy Cook. Morris rushed for 153 yards on 24 carries, scoring on runs of 6, 1, 29 and 14 yards. The 6-2, 215-pound senior also threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Degetau.

Degetau, a foreign exchange student from Cancun, Mexico, had a big game for the Trojans. The 5-8, 155-pound senior returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown, booted four extra point kicks, scored on a two-point conversion run following a botched snap and hold and also booted field goals of 40 and 36 yards. Degetau’s 40-yard field goal had enough leg to cover at least another 10 yards.

“We were kind of methodical today,” said Cumby coach Edward Perez, whose Trojans outgained Union Hill 334-268 in total yardage. “We played ball control. Tried to keep it out of their hands.”

Union Hill balanced the run (136 yards) and the pass (132).

Quarterback Dylan Lindsey was 3-of-7 passing, including touchdowns of 48 yards to Jonathon Cook and 56 yards to Nick Lawton.

Lindsey also ran a yard for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs also scored two points after tackling a Cumby running back in the end zone for a safety.

Perez said Morris played well at quarterback.

“He did a great job for us,” said the Cumby coach. “He’s been working hard. We never expected to lose Timmy.”

Perez said Cook’s playing status is “day to day” after tweaking a knee.
