Community, Cumby fall in openers

Friday night football

MELISSA — The Melissa Cardinals spoiled Community’s season football opener on Friday night, 33-8, in a battle of returning playoff teams.

Melissa outgained the Braves 319-231 in total yardage.

Community quarterback Collin Strahan was 14-of-26 passing for 162 yards including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tay Davis.

Community running back Tim Underwood also rushed for a team-high 68 yards on nine carries.



Como-Pickton 22, Cumby 14

COMO — Como-Pickton turned back Cumby’s late challenge to down the Trojans 22-14 in Friday night’s season opener.

Michael Morris accounted for 196 yards of total offense to lead the Trojans. Morris rushed for 121 yards on 15 carries, scoring on runs of 21 and 17 yards. Morris was also 8-of-16 passing for 75 yards.

Timmy Cook was 4-of-12 passing for 45 yards for the Trojans.



Byers 51, Greenville Phoenix 26

BYERS — Typann Smith scored four touchdowns but the Greenville Phoenix Firebirds still dropped their 2009 six-man football opener 51-26 to Byers on Saturday.

Smith scored on runs of 70 and 10 yards, returned a kickoff 70 yards for a another touchdown and caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from John Perez.
