CADDO MILLS — Gunter, a dangerous team that went two rounds in the playoffs last year, spoiled Caddo Mills’ season opener on Friday night, handing the Foxes a 21-20 loss.
Caddo Mills running back Nathan Jeffery got the Foxes off to a fast start, breaking for a 68-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. The Foxes went up 7-0 following Keegan Block’s kick.
When the Foxes regained possession, the Gunter Tigers responded with tough defense that sacked sophomore quarterback, Tre Couvillion on the seven. A short punt gave the Tigers the ball on the 40-yd line and Gunter covered that yardage in 10 plays to knot the score at 7-7 with 1:13 left in the first period.
Lone Oak 50, Gunter 0
LONE OAK — The Lone Oak Buffaloes have never lost a game to the Palmer Bulldogs and this year was no exception.
The Buffs rolled to a 50–0 shutout in their season opener Friday night.
“We just never let them see the light of day,” said Lone Oak defensive coordinator Dean Lasseter after the game.
The Buffaloes Code Red defense smothered the Bulldogs from the very first play, giving up only 37 yards in the first half.
Leonard 42, Wolfe City 21
LEONARD — The Leonard Tigers started their season with an impressive 42-21 victory over the Wolfe City Wolves on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
Will Cowan lead the way for the Tigers with five touchdowns on the ground. He rushed 16 times for 238 yards. Reggie Robinson rushed for an additional 95 yards for the Tigers. The Tigers amassed a total of 429 yards on the night.
Scoring began with 31 seconds left in the first quarter, with Cowan reaching the end zone on a 71-yard sprint. The PAT was good, and the first period ended, 7-0, in favor of Leonard.
Canton 34, Commerce 9
CANTON — A tight ball game was blown open by a pair of third quarter miscues that left the Commerce Tigers losers 34-9, to the Canton Eagles Friday night.
Both teams started sloppy.
Canton took the open kickoff and drove the field, overcoming three penalties, an 8-yard sack by John McKenna and converting a fourth and seven to set up at the Commerce 27. The Eagles pulled out the trickery with quarterback Chance Wallace lateraling to Trent Termin, who then passed back to Wallace, who raced toward the end zone, but Commerce’s Jurace Brown tracked him down at the one and knocked the ball free. The ball rolled through the end zone for a touchback.
Era 27, Celeste 12
ERA — Despite a great effort by senior Joey Brock, the Celeste Blue Devils couldn’t usher in their new era under a new head coach on a winning note, losing 27-12 to the Era Hornets on Friday night.
Brock ran the opening kickoff back 89 yards for a touchdown, making the score 6-0.
Late in the first quarter, Era put together a long drive, and tied the game, 6-6.
Mineola 9, Quinlan Ford 6
MINEOLA — This Class 3A contest was the story of two different halves of football, resulting in a 9-6 Mineola victory on Friday night over Quinlan Ford.
In the first half, Ford's Panthers dominated time of possession, amassing almost 200 yards of total offense to only 55 for Mineola, and over half of the home team's rushing yards came on the final play of the half with only one second remaining.
Whatever Coach Joe Drennon told his players, combined with coaching adjustments, worked as the Yellowjackets took the second half kickoff and began to dominate play with their rushing attack.
Farmersville 15, Winnsboro 7
FARMERSVILLE — Farmersville’s 15-7 victory over Winnsboro in Friday night’s season football opener might not have been pretty.
But the stubborn Farmer defense never broke down in holding back a tough Red Raider team.
Farmersville jumped out ahead 7-0 on a 1-yard run by Austin Brooks. Then Marcos Delafuente kicked the extra point. Farmersville led 7-0 with 7:08 left in the first quarter.
