Lady Lions tune up soccer skills at camp

By DAVID CLAYBOURN

GREENVILLE Though their season doesn’t start until January, nearly a dozen Greenville Lady Lions tuned up their soccer skills during a two-day camp this week at Greenville High School.

Camp coaches Mo Twilley and Jerry Phillips, with the assistance of several members of the Lions’ boys soccer team, worked with 12 players on Monday and 10 on Tuesday at T.A. “Cotton” Ford Stadium. Matt Mouer, Evan Snider and Denim Douglas were the Lion players helping with the camp on Tuesday.

Ron Beck, the Lady Lions’ head coach, said the camp helped him evaluate some of the prospective players for the upcoming season.

The camp also helped get the players “out of the summer mode,” according to Beck.

Beck is hoping for a better turnout for future camps.

“We hope it grows and grows and grows,” he said.

The Lady Lions will be switching to a soccer district next season that shouldn’t be as tough as their last one. Their district will include three Class 3A teams, Paris, North Lamar and Princeton, along with Sulphur Springs. The boys’ district will also include a 3A team, Commerce. Commerce has not fielded a girls soccer team for a couple of years.
