Herald-Banner Staff

GREENVILLE Teddy Nowell went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in to power the No. 2 state-ranked Mesquite Poteet Pirates to a 12-2 District 10-4A baseball victory over the Greenville Lions on Tuesday night at John Mason Field.

Nowell bounced one double against the fence and another over it, plus added a pair of singles for the Pirates, who pounded 12 hits in five innings.

T.J. Files also drove in two runs with a pair of singles and Taylor Wilcox singled and doubled for 22-3 Poteet, which stayed undefeated in district play at 12-0.

Anthony Yost and Wade Prigmore both finished with two hits apiece to lead the Lions, who dropped to 4-16 for the season and 3-9 in district play with two district games remaining.

Yost singled and scored in the first and singled in the third. N.J. Mason drove in Yost in the first inning with a fielder’s choice.

Prigmore singled in the first and slugged a solo homer to left field in the fourth that traveled an estimated 410 feet. It was Prigmore’s second homer of the season.

Poteet pitchers Johnnie Riley and Tyler Dowse combined on a four-hitter. Riley did not walk a batter and fanned five in four innings. Dowse struck out three in an inning of relief.

Klayton Moore, who allowed 12 hits and six earned runs, took the loss. The Pirates scored three runs in the first, four in the second and five in the fifth to end the game early via the 10-run mercy rule. Moore walked three and struck out five.

Seven of the Pirates’ nine starters produced hits, including one each from Jake Sutton, Brett Doe, Bradley Stone and Ryan Moody.

Greenville has two scheduled games left including one on Friday night at Highland Park and then the season and home finale on Tuesday against Rockwall-Heath.
