Royse City lifters win state championship

GREENVILLE — HOUSTON — Robert Davis and Brandon Joslin won their respective divisions to lead the Royse City Bulldogs to the Division II team championship at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships recently.

Jonathan Hunter also finished second in the superheavyweights as the Bulldogs scored 19 points to claim their first state team championship.

Davis repeated as state champion in the 165-pound class, lifting 500 in the squat, 310 in the bench press and 540 in the deadlift for a 1,350 total, 10 more pounds than last year.

Joslin captured the 198s with a 1,470 total that included bests of 570 in the squat, 380 in the bench and 540 in the deadlift. Joslin set a new state record in the 198s with his 380 bench.

Hunter hoisted 700 in the squats, 415 in the bench and 560 in the deadlift for a 1,675 total in the superheavyweight class.

Lifters from Greenville, Community and Leonard finished third in their weight classes.

Don Hune of Greenville was third in Division I’s 165-pound class at 1,375. Hune handled 550 in the squats, 270 in the bench and 555 in the deadlift.

Cody Wood of Community was third in the 220s in Division II with a 1,540 total. He lifted 610, 355 and 574.

Leonard’s Nathan Dawson, the defending Division III champion in the 165s, finished third this time at 1,315. He lifted 450, 365 and 500.

David Wilcox from Leonard was fourth in Division III’s 220-pound class at 1,395. He handled 560, 350 and 485.

Ronnie Dyer of Caddo Mills finished fifth in Division III’s superheavyweight class at 1,460. He listed 615, 325 and 520.
