Perry making return visit to Greenville

GREENVILLE Governor Rick Perry will be in Greenville Tuesday to speak about his education plan for Texas, according to State Representative Dan Flynn and Boles Independent School District Superintendent Graham Sweeney, who are co-hosting the appearance.

Initial plans call for Perry to speak at 1 or 1:15 p.m. at the Old Greenville Post Office at Lee and King Streets.

“The Governor wants to put his program out there,” Flynn said. “This is not a campaign stop. I spoke to him several weeks ago, and he said he would like to come into the district. His office called yesterday to confirm it and Graham Sweeney agreed to help host it because he knows the needs of public education. We wanted to have in Greenville since it has the largest school system in the district.”

Flynn said he was excited about what will be Perry’s second visit to Greenville in three months.

Perry endorsed Flynn for re-election during his November visit.

Flynn is being challenged in the March 7 Republican Primary by Chuck Tull of Edgewood and by Democrat Scott Cornaud of Quinlan in November.

Perry has only token opposition in the Republican Primary, but will face not only the Democratic nominee in November, but possibly independent candidates Carole Keeton Strayhorn and “Kinky” Freidman.

“I’m always anxious for the Governor to come here,” Flynn said. “As far as I know it’s a positive, although if its one thing I’ve learned, everything is subject to change.”

When contacted Thursday, the Governor’s office could not immediately confirm the details of the visit.
