Celebrating Halloween, birthdays, other scary events

GREENVILLE — Just sitting here, waiting on the Cowboys game to start ...

— The next couple of weeks are going to be pretty busy around the Kellar Estate.

As I’ve mentioned before, there is the upcoming dual party extravaganza for our son Jason’s 7th birthday and our granddaughter Lauryn’s 6th birthday. As the two munchkins have their big milestones only days apart on the calendar, we celebrate the two occasions at the same time ... which also helps save a little of the parent’s/grandparent’s sanity.

This time around, we are treating the tykes and a handful of their friends to an afternoon at Amazing Jake’s in Richardson, which we understand is something like Chuck E. Cheese on steroids ... oh joy. That night there will be a trip to catch the latest animated masterpiece to come out of Hollywood, “Free Birds”, followed we hope by the eventual collapse of said birthday celebrants in restful slumber. Hey, that would give the parents/grandparents something to celebrate ...

— But before that happens, there will be Halloween. After earlier refusing to repeat in his starring role of “Iron Man” during the past two Halloweens, following protracted negotiations with the motion picture studio Jason has decided that, yes, he wants to complete the trilogy and be Iron Man one more time. The chore his parents for the next two weeks is to keep Jason from putting on his Iron Man costume every time we turn our backs ...

— Our daughter Jaylynn, 14, has also been conflicted regarding Halloween. For most of the past month or so, whenever said parents asked their teenage child if she wanted to go trick-or-treating this year, we would get the scrunched up face, the head shake and the firm “No” reply.

That answer slowly changed to a mere shrug of Jaylynn’s shoulders and recently was replaced by an “I guess so.” Of course, she/we still has/have no idea what Jaylynn is going to be on the night of October 31, although last Halloween her mother Vida was able to devise a costume within an hour of Jaylynn’s anticipated departure for trick-or-treating. Jaylynn has also decided on a clever plan.

Not only will she — begrudgingly — join her father and little brother for “Halloween on the Square” downtown this year, but Jaylynn has announced that afterward she plans to accompany her buddy Madison on a door--to-door journey, “So I can get some really good candy.”

You have to admire Jaylynn’s ambition when it comes to chocolate ...

— Jason also carved his first Jack O’ Lantern this year. Jason brought a pre-hollowed pumpkin to his Cub Scout meeting Thursday night and set about sawing into the gourd using special kid-safe tools. Jason had a grand design in his head of how he wanted his pumpkin to appear, with large menacing eyes, a jagged mouth and even sort of an eyebrow/furrowed brow look, which Jason thought would “make him look really mean.”

Upon completion, Jason’s pumpkin had one eye up there, another down over there, a jagged nose and a rectangle mouth which was just a little off-center. And the eyebrow/furrowed brow just kind of turned into an extra hole in the middle of poor Jack’s head. But I give Jason credit ... that is one scary looking pumpkin.

We brought it back to the Estate, where Jason insisted we put two candles inside, to make sure it is bright enough to be seen from the street at night. Sorry about that, passing motorists ...

And I am hoping that his Dad doesn’t resemble that pumpkin, after the great Halloween/dual birthday saga is complete ...

Just a thought ...
