Don't succumb to bullied election

GREENVILLE — The recent mayoral and city council election stories, advertisements and letters to the Editor being published in the Herald Banner are disturbing.  A bloc of candidates, one for mayor and two for council seats are being funded in large part from interests outside the city and county.  Fine, this is the American way – anyone can support whomever they wish.  However, this campaign looks and smells different.  According to campaign funding reports published in the paper, we are seeing $25,000 plus being contributed and spent on elections that normally do not exceeded a few hundred dollars to $3,500.  Final campaign reports for these three candidates may exceed $40,000.  These figures are unprecedented for a local election campaign regardless of the issues involved.

A common thread can be found within the majority of these contributions – L-3.  Seems as if L-3 has decided they cannot win their questionable suits against the city in the courts so they are attempting to stack the city administration with those that will do their work for them.   We have heard the rumors, too numerous and spiteful to repeat here.  Bullying tactics, commonly left to national campaigns, are being used here, in Greenville, to scare citizens into voting for L-3’s bloc of candidates.

I have never liked bullies or being bullied.  Since there are better qualified candidates that are not tied to the hip pocket of L-3 running in each of the races, I urge all Greenville voters to show the bully that we will not succumb to his demeaning and hollow threats.  Vote for the candidates that are independent and cannot be bought.

Sincerely,

Ray McKinney
