Erring on the side of caution

GREENVILLE — Hunt County saw some severe weather earlier this week, but thankfully we were spared the kind of destruction that north Texas and Moore, Okla. had to endure.

Because of the recent destruction, local school officials were even less hesistant than usual to let students out of class early, a move that some individuals have criticized after Hunt County only dealt with heavy rain and wind.

In retrospect, the decision to release students early was unnecessary. No buildings were significantly damaged, there were no tornados in any populated portions of the county, and no hail to speak of.

But in these circumstances, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Even though Tuesday’s storms did not result in a significant amount of damage, they had the potential to.

With all of the negative incidents that have recently occured in schools throughout the country, educators are quick to respond to protect the students’ safety. And justifiably so.

These decisions can result in frustrations for parents and may cause unnecessary panic, but we think that both parents, students and school officials would agree that we don’t mind dealing with these side effects to ensure the protection of our children.

Our local school officials have tough decisions to make in stressful situations that impact hundreds, if not thousands of people. They will not always make the right one.

Our school officials can’t be too quick to let schools out early. We can’t let every little storm or threat cause an early release or school lockdown. But we applaud Hunt County school officials who made the call to release early.

When it comes to our children, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
