Single-most important piece of paper in business

By FAITH BATES

The resume is the single most important piece of paper to a business practitioner. College students spend the last portion of their college years participating in things that will build their resume and give them a competitive edge for the working world.

Books have been dedicated to the art of resume writing. Writing a resume should not be taken lightly because the words written on that piece of paper could mean the difference between getting an interview and being looked over.

The past few articles have been talking about the importance of first impressions, interviews and networking. All of these things have are a commonality between the business world and the pageant world. Resumes are yet another common factor between the two.

In pageantry, the judges are given a copy of all the contestants’ headshots and resumes. The headshot is a pageant contestant’s expertise. The headshot should capture your personality while showing you in a professional light.

Pictures are truly worth a thousand words. Spend the extra money to get the picture professionally photographed. I have already spoken about first impressions and the headshot is a first impression.

The resume that is submitted for pageants must include things that set one girl apart from another. At the end of the day the things that you do and the experiences that you have are what define you on your resume.

The person on paper must be evident in the interview. The same principle applies in the professional world. Qualifications on paper must show in the interview.

It is important for a resume to be show diversity. A well-rounded person can be easily placed in any situation. As a rule of thumb the most important things should be at the top of your resume. Those are the things that will most likely be asked about in your interview.

Even as an adult it is important to find ways to expand your resume. Learning is not something for the young; everyone has the opportunity to learn and become qualified to do anything they choose.
