Dennis Martin

Dennis W. Martin, 63, entered this world at Dallas on Dec. 23, 1949, and went home to heaven on Oct. 15, 2013.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Kelley Martin; mother Helen Ray; sisters Caylen Ray, Judith Martin, Robyn Stroud, and Melissa Caudle; numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and relations; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and beloved stepmom, Al and Sue Martin; his stepfather, Bill Ray; sister Livia Lynn Martin; brother Wayne Martin; and a multitude of cherished relatives, friends and comrades-in-arms.

Dennis served with pride and distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 until 1977, when he was medically retired due to injuries sustained in combat.

A highly decorated Marine, he was awarded the Purple Heart with two gold stars, the Combat Action ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation (Gallantry Cross Medal Color with Palm), among numerous awards and commendations.

Following discharge from his beloved Corps, Dennis returned home to north central Texas, where he lived for many years before relocating to the Texas Hill Country northwest of Austin. During his time here, he graduated with top honors from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce), eventually earning master’s degrees in sociology and theatre.

He was very active in the Dallas-Fort Worth theatre community as a playwright, director, organizer, and instructor. He also served as pastor and ministerial staff for several area churches.

In his time, Dennis wore many hats. He was a lover and a fighter, a teacher, a preacher, a leader of men, a servant of God, a slayer of dragons and a rescuer of distressed damsels. He was a genuine American hero in every sense of the word, and the world is a better place for having had him in it.

A memorial service is scheduled at the Performing Arts Center on the campus of A&M-Commerce on Saturday at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family would welcome donations for building materials and other expenses.
