Edna Jeane Stiggers

Edna Jeane Stiggers was born Jan. 30, 1939, the only child of Edward Cornelius and Anna Belle (Hobdy) Walker, in Jacobia.

She attended St. Paul School in Neylandville, Dunbar High School in Lubbock, Roosevelt High School in Dallas, and Carver High School in Greenville. She was a band majorette and was Band Sweetheart.

Edna Jeane was baptized at an early age at St. Paul Baptist Church, Neylandville. Later, as an adult, she rededicated her life to Christ.

Her employment included, but was not limited to positions with E-Systems, Atlanta Life Insurance Company, Lance, and Citizens General Hospital in Greenville. She was also employed at Mobile Traveler in Junction City, Kan., St. Mary’s Hospital in Lubbock and Methodist Hospital in Dallas.

She even drove a taxi in and around Fort Bragg, N.C. A longtime certified nursing assistant, she retired in 1998.

Edna Jeane, affectionately called Granny by her grandchildren and G-G by her great-grandchildren, was a loyal supporter of Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Disabled American Veterans.

She was an enthusiastic lover of most sports and a faithful Dallas Cowboys’ and Texas Rangers’ fan.

But to nothing and no one was she more supporting, loyal and loving than to her family. A devoted military spouse, mother, and grandmother, she was the champion of her family, and her family was her world. For the family, she was their center, their heart.

Edna Jeane was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Belle Walker; her father, Edward Cornelius Walker; granddaughter Karen Lynette Mapps; and great-grandson Elijah Xavier Mapps.

She leaves to cherish her beloved memory her husband of more than 53 years, Billy Stiggers Sr.; four daughters, Edith (John) Cotton, Deborah Nelson, Karen (Eric) Mapps, and Donna (Larry) Stiggers-Davis; two sons, Billy (Benita) Stiggers Jr. and David (Cheryl) Stiggers; 20 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Another great-grandchild and another great-great-grandchild are expected in the upcoming months.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Living Waters Ministries Church, 2232 Franklin Drive, in Mesquite.  Interment will follow at DFW National Cemetery in Dallas.

A wake is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Jaynes Memorial Chapel, 811 South Cockrell Hill Road in Duncanville (972-298-2334).
