Dorothy Cannon

GREENVILLE — Services for Dorothy Davis Cannon, 86, of Longview will be held at First Christian Church in Longview at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to service. Interment will follow services at Memory Park Cemetery.

Dorothy Davis Cannon was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Greenville and passed away Aug. 14, 2013, in Longview.  

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Atkins and husband Philip and Shelley Frederick and former husband Mark; grandchildren Thomas Jack Hilton and wife Elena, Nicole Atkins-Johnson and husband Will, Adam Atkins and wife Teresa, Heidi Frederick, and Bret Frederick and wife Suzie; eight great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Mary Davis; an aunt, Louise Love; and nieces, nephews, and many children whom she loved as her own.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert.

Dorothy graduated from North Texas State and moved to Longview in 1947, taught at White-Oak ISD and in the Longview ISD until 1987. She also co-managed Shade-Wood Saddle Club with her husband in the ‘50s. She was past president of the Longview Federated Clubs, named Woman of the Year in 2005, regent and past president of Aaron Burleson Chapter of the DAR, past president of TSTA, Texas Retired Teachers Association, life member of PTA, and was selected Teacher of the Year by her peers. She was a member of First Christian Church of Longview, Mom’s in Touch, Shakespeare Club, an active volunteer at Gregg County Museum, Bethany House. She was a devoted Bible student and mentor of many students who were always recalled by name.

Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Hilton, Adam Atkins, Will Johnson, Bret Frederick, Martin Alamanza and Casey Williams.
