Charles White

WICHITA FALLS —   Charles Ewing “Charlie” White, 83, of Wichita Falls passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the House of Hope in Wichita Falls.

He was born April 28, 1929, in Paris, Texas, to Anna Grace and Charles McGill White.  He grew up in the small east Texas town of Commerce where he worked from an early age in the family dry goods business learning the value of hard work and determination. There he met and married his beloved wife of 60 years Willa Dean Matherly.

Graduating from Texas A&M-Commerce with a degree in Mathematics he began his career as a math teacher and high school coach in Garland.  He soon joined the Navy as an officer, serving overseas in the Naval Intelligence and Ariel Photo Reconnaissance efforts during the Korean War.

Upon release from active duty he worked at Sheppard Air Force Base for more than 30 years as Chief of Programs and was instrumental in acquiring and developing the Euro-Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training mission that continues to this date at SAFB.

Charlie loved his country and tirelessly served the military branches of the Air Force and Navy. He was the recipient of countless awards and achieved the rank of Captain and Commanding Office of the Dallas Naval Air Station’s Intelligence Reserve Unit.

The Air Force Association recognized his accomplishments by naming him Civilian of the Year for his contributions and support of the Air Force and Sheppard Air Force Base.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his much loved wife Willa Dean White in 2010.

He is survived by his son James Charles “Chuck” White and his wife Debbie Carroll White of Wichita Falls; grandson Jeffrey Charles White and his wife Amy of Addison; grandson Bradford James White and his wife Rachael, also of Addison; brother James McGill White and his wife Jane of Commerce; and sister Mary Katherine Roberts and her husband Ronald of Sherman.

A graveside service under the direction of Reggie Coe of Grace Church took place Saturday at Crestview Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the House of Hope Good Samaritan Fund at the Presbyterian Manor or to the White Family MSU Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Wichita Falls Community Foundation.
