Larry Wray

GREENVILLE — Larry Joe Wray of Greenville went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 3, 2013.

He was born July 12, 1946, in Greenville to Fraser Wray and Paulyne Smith. Larry and Jan Mims were married on March 9, 1974, in Dallas and have remained best friends for the last 39 years.

Larry graduated from W.W. Samuel High School in Dallas and then went on to college earning an associate’s degree in 1968 and bachelor’s degree in 2012 from Dallas Baptist.

Larry was an actor in film and TV appearing in several “Dallas” episodes and TV commercials.

He was employed in the private security industry and worked his way up through the ranks from security officer and patrol officer to sales and completing his career in management. During this time he also worked as a bodyguard for all types of clients, including several celebrities.

Larry’s strong faith guided his heart throughout life, and he became a licensed minister of the gospel at the age of 16. Larry was an active member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Greenville. Alongside his wife, they led the church’s prison ministry. Larry attained the rank of Eagle Scout and served as an adult volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America for 15 years.

Larry and Jan have served with Bill Glass Champions for Life taking the gospel of Jesus Christ into the prisons for the last 15 years as staff members, local team members, coordinators and teammates.

As a native Texan, Larry proudly displayed love for his state. He took great joy in making people laugh and was known by his friends and family for his wonderful sense of humor, infectious smile, a steadfast faith in God and, most importantly, a servant leader’s heart.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, father, stepfather J.D. Bowden, brother Richard Wray and son John Wray.

Larry is survived by  his wife, Jan Wray; son William Wray and wife Amanda Heinrich;  grandchildren Melody Wray, Kamryn Heinrich and Kyle Heinrich; siblings Jimmy Wray, Tommy Bowden, Bonita Meek, Robert Wray, Sherri Nagel and Bonnie Weaver; and numerous other family members and friends.

Services for Larry will be held at Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 6801 Wesley, in Greenville, with family visitation today from 6 to 8 p.m. and a memorial celebration on Wednesday, May 8, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Larry’s name to Boy Scouts of America or Bill Glass Champions for Life.
