Funeral services for Mrs. Ilene Henry Rodgers, 88-year-old Lubbock resident, are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church of Trenton. Rev. James Henry will officiate. Burial will be in the Leonard Cemetery.
Family visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home chapel at Leonard.
Mrs. Rodgers was born Sept. 14, 1924, near Leonard. Her parents were Overton Alexander Hamilton Henry and Delia Price Taylor Henry.
Ilene accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Blanton’s Chapel. She grew up with her four siblings in the Leonard area and moved to Greenville to work as a telephone operator during World War II.
In 1943, Ilene met Joe M. Rodgers, the love of her life and they married on Feb. 8, 1947. Shortly after marrying they moved to Lubbock, where Ilene became a homemaker and Joe began his career as a mail carrier. They had one daughter, Donna Jo.
Ilene was a graduate of Leonard High School and a member of the St. Matthew’s Methodist Church in Lubbock. She worked for many years as a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and she was very active in her church serving as a volunteer where needed for more than 60 years. Her interests included family, genealogy and reading. She was an avid writer of family history.
She passed away at her residence in Lubbock Sunday Dec. 30, 2012, with her family by her side.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband: Joe M. Rodgers; her daughter and son-in-law: Donna J. and Andy Anderson; her grandchildren: Christopher M. Anderson, Delia J. O’Steen and husband, Salem, and Katherine D. Anderson, all of Lubbock. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, A.H. Henry; her mother, Delia Henry; two brothers, Olen Henry and baby brother and three sisters, Lucille Todd, Morene Sudderth and Ima Henry.
Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home of Leonard is in charge of arrangements.
