Mary Casey

Mary Cravens Casey of Commerce passed away June 15, 2013, in McKinney following an illness.

Mary was born on June 20, 1928, to Brooksey and Charley Cravens in the Mount Zion community. She attended school at Branom and graduated from Commerce High School. In 1950 she graduated from East Texas State Teachers College (Texas A&M University-Commerce) with a bachelor’s degree and later a master’s. She married Leland Casey on Jan. 25, 1946; and they had one daughter, Judy Hadaway.

Mary, Leland and Judy moved to Pecos in 1951 and spent the next 30 years with the Pecos Independent School District. They remained in Pecos until they retired in 1984, and they moved back to the East Texas area, settling in Commerce.

They were both very active in the community and delighted in being back where they both grew up and where they could enjoy their extended family and friends.

Mary was currently a member of First United Methodist Church, the Dough Rollins Sunday School class, Northeast Hunt County Retired Teacher Association, United Methodist Women, Webb Hill Country Club, and several bridge clubs.

She spent many years volunteering at the church, most notably as a helper in the office, setting up sanctuary flowers for holidays, decorating for special events and was well known for organizing the funeral meals for the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Leland; her sister, Georgia Davis;  and a brother, Dewitt Cravens.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy and husband Jerry Hadaway of Prosper; grandchildren Michael Foulds and wife Teri of Midland and Casey Foulds of Denton; great-grandchildren Sutton, Sawyer and Sloan Foulds, all of Midland; her dear sister, Nita Herman of Cumby; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Commerce, officiated by Rev. Valerie Englert. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Cumby.

Visitation  is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Commerce Funeral Home.  Pallbearers for the service will be Sutton Foulds, Sawyer Foulds, Benny Herman, Roger Herman, Don Stringer, Jim Ainsworth, and Mickey Cravens.

Memorials may be directed to the Mary and Leland Casey Scholarship fund, in care of First United Methodist Church Foundation of Commerce; the Mount Zion Cemetery Association, Cumby; or a charity of choice.

Online condolences may be made at www.commercefuneralhome.com
