Lee Leonard

GREENVILLE — Lee Leonard left this world to be with his Lord on May 4, 2013.

He was born Oct. 23, 1947, in Bristow, Okla., to the parentage of Leland Leonard Sr. and Maxine Hagle Leonard.

He and his sister, Mary Ann, were raised in Eunice, N.M., where he learned to love and excel in all sports and outdoor activities.

Lee enjoyed a close and lasting relationship with his classmates, graduating in 1965 from Eunice High School. One of his greatest achievements was earning a basketball scholarship to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M., where he received a bachelor of science degree. He later gained a master’s degree from East Texas State University in Commerce.

In his teaching and coaching career of almost 40 years in Eunice, Greenville, Commerce, and Caddo Mills, he touched so many lives and was loved by all his students.

The family has received many loving comments from former students and friends that a new angel has entered Heaven’s gates.

Lee was a talented athlete, an avid hunter and fisherman and a scratch golfer. Many young people have had the privilege of being taught these arts by him, and will continue his love for these throughout their lives.

He is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Barbara Holley Leonard; a sister, Mary Ann Simmang and husband Donnie of Lincoln, Texas; three daughters, Micah Valderrama of Plano, Staci Mouden and husband Matt of Cedar Park, and Ashley Gillham Johnson and husband Brent of Paris; one son, David Isom and wife Shannon of Campbell; and mother-in-law Virginia Holley of Campbell. He leaves behind to cherish his memory 11 grandchildren, Caleb, Sarah, Matthew, and Colby Valderrama; Kendall and Cameron Mouden; Riley, Emma and Levi Isom; and Jack and Georgia Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Rick Selvaggi, the nurses and staff of Oak Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation, American Hospice and Hunt Regional Community Hospital in Commerce for all of their loving care.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Al Barnett and Rev. Jay Porterfield officiating. Interment will follow at Sonora Cemetery in Fairlie.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family requests memorials be made in Lee’s memory to the The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Dallas Chapter Office at 4144 N. Central Expressway, Suite 750, Dallas, 75204.
