Gilbert Thornton

WOLFE CITY — Gilbert F. Thornton of Irving, born Sept. 24, 1916, passed away March 18, 2014, in Baylor Irving Hospital at the age of 97.

He was a graduate of Class  No. 5 of the Dallas Fire Department and served as a fireman in Dallas for many years.

After his time in the Fire Department he owned and operated Humble service stations in Dallas and later Irving.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Irving and a member of  the Evergreen Class.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Lee, and son Terry Lee.

He is survived by his son, Jerry D. Thornton and wife Hilda of Katy; three grandsons, Brent and wife Kristin of Denton, Ben and wife Elisa of Denton and Daniel and wife Mallory of Katy; six great-grandchildren, Morgan, Jack, Lola, Adeline, Mia and Sydney; one brother, Shelby Thornton of Irving; and several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert loved watching sports on television, especially the Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys.

He loved the Lord and expressed it daily in his prayers.  He held his family in high esteem and loved to tell anyone about them.

Even at the age of 97, he was an avid reader and kept up on current events.  He traveled all over the United States with his wife in their motor home, sometimes taking their three grandsons along the way. Trips they will always remember.

The family would like to express their appreciation to his long-time caregivers for the loving care they extended to him — Eva Aguilar, Elizabeth Solis, Nora Phillips and Alice Worthy.

The family would like to also extend their appreciation to the nursing staff at Baylor-Irving Hospital for the care they gave Gilbert.  The family is also grateful to Ed Graham, close friend, who visited Gilbert almost daily.

Funeral Services will be on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 10 a,m, in the chapel of R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home in Wolfe City, with burial to follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City.

The family request that any remembrances be made to the charity of choice.
