Charles Hurse

Charles Leon Hurse, 90, died Jan. 12, 2014.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Commerce Funeral Home, with funeral services following at 2 p.m. in the chapel.

He received his B.S. degree from East Texas Teachers College and his M.S. degree in real estate appraisal from Southern Methodist University.

He retired from the City of Dallas as a land appraiser in 1984 and was self-employed with Leon Hurse Real Estate until shortly before his death.

Leon was born July 25, 1923, in Wolfe City, to Charley and Mollie Foy Hurse.

He had a variety of interests that included farming, ranching, cattle and real estate appraising.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ladonia and a 50-plus year Mason.

Leon served as mayor of Ladonia for 17 years from 1992 to 2009 leading in vision, and he was instrumental in development of plans for Lake Ralph Hall along with the dam for the lake that will be named Leon Hurse Dam in his honor.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Mollie Foy Hurse, and a sister Eva Johnson.

He is survived by his first wife Katie Vance Hurse of Greenville; sons Gary Hurse and wife Virginia of Lovington, N.M.; Jeff Hurse and wife Judy of Wylie; a daughter Myra Wrenn and husband Tommy of Greenville;  grandchildren, Gary L. Hurse II and wife Joy of New Braunfels,John C. Hurse and wife Meghan of Longview, Sarah Hurse of Lake Kiowa, Jason and Ben Wrenn of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Jaxon Hurse and Cora Hurse; along with niece and nephew, Marilyn Foley of Mobile, Ala., Ronnie Hardeman of Pagosa Springs, Colo.

Pallbearers will be Ken Wright, Jerry Lane, Ed Pickard, Bobby Hill, Mike Davis, and Gary Nichols

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Taylor, Jack Sudderth and Charles Vance.

Leon was a true visionary, he was very giving and was loved by many. He loved Ladonia. Leon always said “Home is where your goodies are”

The family would like to give special thanks to Odyssey Hospice, Greenville for taking such excellent care of Leon.

Memorials may be made to the Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 65, Ladonia, 75449.
