'Jim' Kirby Sr.

GREENVILLE — James “Jim” Curtis Kirby Sr., 82, of Greenville passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2012, in Greenville.

Jim was born July 29, 1930, in Votaw, Texas, to Solomon and Mary Kirby. Jim was a devoted family man, avid golfer, and a great dancer. He was invited to dance in Gene Kelly’s movie “And the Devil Makes Three.” Jim served in the United States Air Force for more than 21 years, receiving numerous awards, including Airman of the Year.

Jim was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 22 years, working the program diligently and helping countless others along the way. Jim loved golf and was a well-loved fixture at Oak Creek for many years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jan of Greenville; daughters Darla Baker of Greenville, Joy Gagnon of Palm Bay, Fla., Mary Bryant of Wieland, Sherry Orman of Garland and Karen Hare of Garland; a son, Scott Roland of Arlington; a sister, Bernice Rhodes of Alexandra, La.; grandchildren Tosha, Alexandra, Savannah, Sarah, Trey, Ginger, Michelle and Misty; and one great-grandchild, Alyssa.

 Jim was preceded in death by a son, James Curtis Kirby Jr. in March of 1990.

Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. today at First Pentecostal Church of God at 2615 Walnut Street in Greenville. A memorial service follows at 2 p.m. at the church with Joyce Pattison officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the National Cemetery in Dallas.  

Lynch Funeral Service of Greenville is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association.
