Gordon Thomas

GREENVILLE — Gordon Ray Thomas, 77, of Greenville passed away Feb. 16, 2014, in Greenville.

He was born Nov. 10, 1936, to Haywood and Wilma Thomas.

Gordon began his career as a technical illustrator. He later turned to free lance advertising illustration and the production of educational art. His illustrations have won many awards and have been distributed nationally.

He had become a versatile artist, producing art for television, film, animation, painting and later a new dimension, sculpting. It was during summer vacations in Big Bend and northern New Mexico that his love for the “Old West” flourished, creating a strong desire to recreate in paint and bronze, the people, places and things out of our past. Gordon was known and loved by many, but even more knew him because of his brilliant artistic work such as the statue of Audie Murphy at the Cotton Museum, Sam Rayburn and William Mayo at the Texas A&M University in Commerce and the last piece he ever completed, the pink lady and little girl at the hospital.

Many had the pleasure of seeing Gordon perform his impersonation of Elvis. Gordon always loved listening to Elvis and many others.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; sons  Steve Thomas and wife Laura of Greenville, Brett Thomas and wife Lee of Dallas, Rick Houston and wife Sherri of Greenville, and Dennis Houston and wife Diann of Greenville; a daughter, Robin Bench of Greenville; sisters Rene Thomas of Greenville and Susan Mobley of Dallas; grandchildren Austin Thomas, Amanda Bench, Ryan Houston, Adam Houston, Kayla Bright, Jeremy Houston, Ashley Strait, and Jared Bruner and eight great-grandchildren.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents.

His funeral service is at 10 a.m. today at Lynch Funeral Service in Greenville.
