James Erwin

GREENVILLE — James “Sarge” Erwin, 74, passed away May 23, 2013, at his home in Campbell. His funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Highland Terrace Baptist Church under the direction of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be Dr. James Ralson, Rev. Lucas McManus and Mr. Chester Lee.  Burial will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery. 

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sarge was born in Campbell to Jess Phillip and Ollie Bell Collins Erwin on Sept. 11, 1938.

He married the love of his life, Billie Joyce Nix, on Nov. 9, 1957, in Sulphur Springs. Sarge was a veteran serving his country with the U.S. Air Force.

In his earlier years he and his family were owners and operators of Maltburger Café, but he served as Hunt County Justice of the Peace for 20 years until his recent retirement. He was a deacon and member of the First Baptist Church of Campbell.

He was a former member of  the Greenville Lions Club, previous municipal judge at Celeste, former board member of  Women in Need Organization; former member of the Campbell Independent School District School Board. 

He was an avid domino and pool player and loved outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing.

Sarge is survived by his wife, Billie Joyce Erwin of Campbell; daughters Donna Erwin of Campbell, Wanda Taylor of Ennis, Dian Erwin of Houston and Amy Erwin of Dallas; a son, Jimmy Erwin of Beaumont; brother J.P. Erwin of Houston; sisters Thelma Armstrong of Fort Worth, Tody Banspach of Arlington and Anita Daniels of Covington; grandchildren Bryan Lunceford and wife Ashley of Campbell, Julie McCormack and husband Jeremy of Campbell, Lee Taylor of Dallas and David Taylor of Ennis; and great-grandchildren Kelsey, Kaylee and Kash McCormack and Brylee Lunceford, all of Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be Norman Hall, Jerry Morrison, Mack Poole, Charles Roberts, Larry Shaw, Penny Young, and Don Zachary. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Bryan Lunceford, Jeremy McCormack, Lee Taylor, and David Taylor.

The family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice for their care and support.
