Mary Washburn


— Mary Ruth Howell Washburn was born Aug. 10, 1921, to parents Mary Goode Howell of Quinlan and Clem Hubert Howell of Van Zandt County and died Oct. 26, 2013.

She was raised in Greenville and graduated from Amarillo High School in Amarillo in 1939. She married John Knox Washburn of Greenville in 1940. They were married for 60 years until John’s death in 2000.

Mary helped John with the family dairy farm until 1955 when they moved to Dallas and she began her 40-year career as an LVN at Parkland Hospital.

Two years later the family relocated to Wichita Falls where she worked at Wichita General Hospital and University Park Clinic. Mary and John eventually relocated to Lake Possum Kingdom, where she continued her nursing career at Graham General Hospital and Graham Medical Associates until her retirement.

She and John were founding members of Westlake Chapel of Possum Kingdom Lake where she cherished her years as Adult Class Sunday school teacher.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John K Washburn; her son, John H. Washburn; her siblings, Frank Howell, Virginia Vinyard, and David Howell; and her parents, Mary Goode Howell and Clem Howell.

Mary is survived by sons David Washburn and wife Dorcas of Wichita Falls and Michael Washburn of Possum Kingdom Lake; a sister, Betty Ellis of Dallas; brother James Howell of Dallas; grandchildren Philip Washburn of Graham, Barbara Telford of La Center, Ky., Meridith Barkley of Benton, Ky., Frances Washburn of Austin, Jonathan Washburn of Ely, Nev., Sarah Washburn of Wichita Falls, Joshua Washburn of Midland, Chandra Birdwell of Leander, Zach Washburn of Graham, Gabe Washburn of  Charleston, S.C., James Washburn of Olney, and Kaitlyn Washburn of Olney; 10 great-grandchildren, Brittany Thomas, Mariah Barkley, Alayna Barkley, David Barkley, Nathan Washburn, Hannah Washburn, Theresa Birdwell, Ella Birdwell, MacKinsey Washburn, and Sterling Washburn; one great-great-granddaughter, Cambria Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Westlake Chapel of Possum Kingdom or Hospice of Wichita Falls.

Her funeral service is at 2 p.m. today at McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home in Graham. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memoryland Memorial Cemetery in Greenville.
