Geneva Nevil

ABILENE — Geneva Bates Nevil, 82, died March 29, 2014, in a local hospital. Services are at 10 a.m. today at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3325 N. 12th in Abilene, with Bishop Ben Bryner officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Starbuck Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Street, in Merkel is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva was born in Sunset in Hunt County, Aug. 2, 1931, to Alonzo Martin and Dora (Luker) Bates.

She married Daris Russell “D.R.” Nevil April 19, 1952. The couple lived briefly in Corpus Christi before moving to Dallas. They moved to Abilene January 1959 to open a Southern Maid Donut Shop, which was later changed to Taste Delight Donuts.

Geneva worked with D.R. in the donut shop until they sold it in 1980. After selling the shop, she worked in the bookkeeping department for Abilene Lumber, then for Dr. Robert and Bekki Leverton until their children were grown. In later years she worked for Wylie Independent School District, then left to care for D.R.

After D.R.’s death she went back to work for Wylie ISD several years, then retired due to health problems.

Genvea lived 43 years on Hardwick Road in the Wylie community, before building a small home in the Caps community with her eldest son and daughter-in-law.

Survivors include three sons, Dan Nevil and wife Juanita of Abilene, William “Will” Arthur Nevil II and wife Shannon of Killeen, and Daris Nevil and wife Marianne of McKinney; a daughter, Floye Villegas and husband Rik of Dubai; son-in-law Greg Hardegree of Abilene; four sisters, Safrona Hackler of Greenville, Rose Mulder of Dallas County, Mary Luckey of Wolfe City and Donna Kay Cooper of Watauga; a brother, Ralph Bates and wife Wanda of Greenville; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Sonja Hardegree, and sister Mavis Bates.
