GREENVILLE — John Preston Crofford, born Oct. 8, 1935, passed from this life Feb. 7, 2014 at Medical Center of Plano.  He had been in and out of hospitals since 2010 and was “ready to meet his maker.”  Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Monday at Highland Terrace Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Layman and Rev. Royce Litchfield officiating.  Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park.  Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

John graduated from Quitman High School and then joined the Army during the Korean War, serving his time based in Germany.

Upon his return, he joined the Dallas Police Department, serving 28 years until his retirement in 1986.  He worked many years at the Northwest Substation as a Patrolman and then Sergeant.  His latter years were served in the office of the Assistant Chief of Police.  He was one of the last living officers to have been on duty during President Kennedy’s assassination, stationed at Market Hall and then Parkland Hospital.

John and Billie Phillips were married on March 5, 1960 and enjoyed a happy life of nearly 54 years together.  The marriage produced a son and daughter, David and Donna, of whom he was most proud, and he loved being PaPa to granddaughters Lauren, Kristin and Jordan.

John accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior when he was nine-years-old and was a member of the Highland Terrace Baptist Church in Greenville and the most caring Sunday School class ever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Beverly and Alma Monteen Crofford, and his brother William Arnold Crofford.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Billie; his son David and wife Donna June of Scottsdale, Arizona; his daughter, Donna of Allen; sisters Nevilledeen Smith and husband Ed of Jefferson and Jeribeth Dunlap of Russellville, Arkansas; brother Beverly Lee Crofford and wife Shirley of Springfield, Arkansas; nephews and nieces Brad Smith, Brian Smith and wife Kelly, Brandon Smith, Jon David Dunlap and wife Amy, Kerry Crofford and wife Sharla, Kelly Hurt and husband Brian, Keith Crofford and wife Brittney, Darren Crofford and wife Melissa; mother-in-law Kate Phillips of Greenville; sister-in-law Bobbie Holbrook of Dallas; and numerous very dear friends.

Pallbearers will be Billy Prince, Jim Everett, Billy Maroney, David Lane, J. K. Slemmons and Finess Smith.
