Paul H. Roosevelt, PhD, 87 of Commerce, passed away on Dec. 7, 2013 in Paris, Texas.
Paul was born March 23, 1926. in Edwards County, Ill., to John Earl Roosevelt and Edith May Roosevelt. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II serving primarily on the island of Saipan in the Pacific Theatre.
He received his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Illinois University, his master’s degree at Northwestern, and he was awarded the first PhD at Southern Illinois University.
He established the Speech and Hearing Program at East Texas State University as well as the Speech and Hearing Clinic. He served as the director of the program from 1952 until his retirement in 1983.
Paul married Kathryn June Jack on Aug. 11, 1949, and she preceded him in death in 1983.
He was preceded in death by his parents, other family members Robert and Ruth Roosevelt, John E. Roosevelt, Howard Boewe, Wayne and Mary Challacombe, Jeanann Roosevelt, Penny Roosevelt King and Sonja Johnson Pedersen.
He is survived by wife, Linda Johnson Roosevelt of Commerce; children Jack and Teresa Roosevelt of Conway, Ark., Nancy Stallings and Brad of Paris, Texas, Robin Johnson Alexander and George of Greenville, and Rick Pedersen of Cooper; grandchildren Nicholas and Alex Stallings of Fayetteville, Ark., Chase Pedersen of Austin, Kolt Pedersen of Morgantown, W.V., Dylan Pedersen of Nacogdoches, Abbie and Katie Duncan and George Alexander Jr. of Greenville, Evelyn Roosevelt Boewe, Donald and Elaine Roosevelt and Darrell and Wanda Roosevelt all of Illinois. Paul is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be at First Presbyterian Church of Commerce at 10 a.m. on Friday. Commerce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
