Howell McCarley

Mr. Howell Day McCarley of Blue Ridge passed away Nov. 12, 2012, in McKinney.

He was born March 1, 1929, in Delva, Texas, the son of Eugene and Lena Duke McCarley. He graduated from Blue Ridge High School at age 16 and then attended and graduated from East Texas State College in three years. He then began his teaching career in Blue Ridge.

In 1951 Mr. McCarley joined the U.S. Air Force; and while stationed in Moses Lake, Wash., he was one of the lucky 29 survivors out of 116 who were involved in the crash of a C124.

After his term in the Air Force, he resumed his teaching career in 1955 at Dallas ISD and retired in 1985 as an administrator of the Evening School at Skyline High School. He married Peggy Compton Dec. 31, 1953, in Celeste.

Mr. McCarley was also a member of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church and the Blue Ridge Masonic Lodge and was a 50-year Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy of almost 59 years; his children, Ken McCarley and Chuck McCarley and wife Becky of Blue Ridge and Dean McCarley and wife Kelly of Sugar Land; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Vickie Musser, and one grandson, Neal McCarley.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Blue Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Johnnie Jones and Rev. Shawn Bailey officiating. Masonic graveside rites will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today evening at the church.

Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home of Farmersville is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family request that contributions be made in his name to the Blue Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund.
