Parks Goodwin

Walter Parks Goodwin III, 78. native Texan from San Antonio and formerly of Alpine and Greenville, passed away on the morning of Dec. 22, 2013, surrounded by his family..

He was born Oct. 4, 1935, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio,  to Col. Walter Parks Goodwin Jr. and Mary Ellis Hardin Goodwin. He spent much of his childhood on military bases throughout the United States and Europe just before and during World War II.

After the war his family remained in Italy and he attended school in Gstaad, Switzerland, before returning to Oklahoma and Texas. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1954 and went on to begin his college education in Monterrey, Calif., then transferred to Louisiana Tech in 1956.

It was there that he met Jill Oswalt who would become his wife for 52 years.

Parks and Jill raised a family in Greenville, where Parks completed a physics degree at East Texas State University and began his 35-year career at E-Systems. Parks had a beautiful bass voice and sang in the Greenville Community Chorus. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for many years and served on the vestry, first as junior warden, then as senior warden.

Later, he was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church and served as a member of the session.

Parks and Jill shared a longtime love of the Big Bend region of Texas and spent many family vacations there with their three children. They decided to retire to Alpine in 1995. Parks was involved with many organizations during his time there. He attended First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He also served as president of the board of the Alpine Community Center where he was named Volunteer of the Year in 1998. He was also a member of the 1996 class of Leadership Big Bend.

As medical needs became more demanding,

Parks and Jill moved back to the city of his birth, San Antonio. He attended University United Methodist Church and was a member of their choir. Later he became a resident of The Village at Incarnate Word where he made many friends and was a member of various clubs. At the time of his death he was a resident at Morningside Manor and was greatly loved there and will be sorely missed.

Parks was a voracious reader, possessed a sharp intellect and had a terrific sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family. His thinly veiled attempts at playing the role of the curmudgeon were often thwarted by his sensitive nature and he never fooled anyone.

He doted on his doggies and was a friend to all animals. His family loved him dearly and his memory will live on in their hearts.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jill; his son and namesake Walter Parks Goodwin IV; his daughter Marla Goodwin and husband Tom McLey; his daughter Amelie Goodwin Urbanczyk and husband Kevin; his sister and best friend Elizabeth Clark; grandchildren Matteson Emma Goodwin, Walter Parks Goodwin V, Pruitt Urbanczyk, Walt Urbanczyk, and great-grandchild Colton McLey.

Memorials may be made to Alpine Humane Society, the Alpine Public Library, or the charity of your choice.
