Quinlan residents to discuss shooting of “town dog” at city council meeting

QUINLAN — The Quinlan City Council will provide residents with an opportunity to discuss the shooting of a dog that several local businesses and individuals had adopted as the “town dog.”

According to Tommie Taber, an assistant manager at the Quinlan Family Dollar, the dog, who was affectionately named Boomer, was well-loved.

“Someone dropped him off, like people do with many stray dogs,” she said. “During the ice storm, Wal-Mart even let him sleep inside next to the carts. Everyone fell in love with him.”

Boomer was shot on April 4, and Taber said she believes he was shot in the Family Dollar parking lot.

However, Quinlan Mayor Donny Brock said there is no evidence to prove that the dog was shot in the parking lot, and that an individual came forward and claimed she shot the dog while Boomer was attacking her pet, and that Boomer then walked into the parking lot and died.

“We have no evidence whatsoever to invalidate the sworn affidavit we have from the individual who claims to have dispatched the animal in the county for attacking her personal pet on her property,” Brock said. “We continue to ask, and have since day one, for anybody who saw anything to contact the police department at 903-356-2500 or call City Hall.”

Since the shooting, flyers have been made and posted around town. Some residents have them attached to their vehicles, Taber said.

“The town is in an uproar,” Taber said. “People want to light torches. The city has reached a boiling point.”

Brock said that he is concerned about anyone who discharges a firearm in city limits.

“We will investigate every aspect of this case,” he said. “I am very concerned about any aspect of gun fire in the city, regardless of what is shot.”

The city council will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
