Saying Happy Birthday to Old Glory

GREENVILLE — A local salute to the American Flag will have a new home this year.

But patriotic individuals are still expected to gather at the same time Saturday evening, to join in the celebrating the birth of the Stars and Stripes during the annual Flag Day ceremonies.

Local ceremonies in conjunction with the national observance of Flag Day are scheduled Saturday evening at the Greenville Elks Lodge No. 708, 3504 Wesley Street. The Ambassador Fletcher Warren Chapter of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution will join with several others in hosting the event, starting at 5:45 p.m., with the event timed to coincide with the “Pause for the Pledge”; the moment at 6 p.m. local time when everyone across the nation is asked to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The event will also feature a presentation and demonstration on the history of the flag.

Since 1988 the Ambassador Fletcher Warren Chapter has helped promote patriotism through educational programs at area schools, such as oratory contests and citizenship awards. Many years ago, former Greenville Mayor “Pete” Gladding asked the organization to take over the city’s annual Flag Day ceremony and to keep it going.

The Stars and Stripes came into being on June 14, 1777.  On that day, the Second Continental Congress authorized a new flag to symbolize this new nation. That flag was made by Mary Pickersgill of Baltimore, Md. The flag was delivered to Fort McHenry on August 19, 1813 a full year before the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812.  It was during that battle that Francis Scott Key penned the National Anthem.
