County voters head to polls today

By BRAD KELLAR
Herald-Banner Staff

Voters in Hunt County will be making choices today on a variety of issues; from alcohol sales to constitutional amendments changing property appraisals statewide.

Voters in one area community will be deciding whether to become the county’s newest city.

Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. today. A list of polling places and sample ballots are included in today’s editions of the Herald-Banner.

Voters south of Greenville will be deciding whether the Cash community will become a city. A map of the area proposed for incorporation is available through the Hunt County Voter Administration Office at 2217 Washington Street in downtown Greenville. The City of Cash, if it is approved, would start at State Highway 34 where it runs eastward between County Road 3505 and Rancho Road on the west and includes tracts of land along Brookland Drive, Shady Acres Road and Byrum Road. If voters do approve the formation of a new city, on the same ballot Jeramy Williams, Cody Baise and Jason B. Monroe are also seeking to become the first members of the city’s commission.

Residents of Quinlan and Wolfe City will be deciding on whether to allow sales of beer and wine at off-premise locations such as grocery stores. The second issue, if approved by voters, would allow residents to purchase alcoholic beverages by the drink at licensed establishments without having to become a member of a private club.

Voters will also decide on 11 proposed amendments put forth by the 81st Legislature. Proposition 2 deals with changes in the taxation of homestead property, while Proposition 3, if approved, would require the legislature to provide for uniform standards for property appraisals. Proposition 11 would add restrictions in the use of eminent domain for seizing personal property for public use.

Texans can review ballot language, explanatory statements regarding each proposed amendment and a sample ballot for the Nov. 3 election through the Voter Administration Office, on the office’s link at the www.huntcounty.net Web site or on the Texas Secretary of State’s Web site at www.sos.state.tx.us.

Those with questions concerning the election can contact the Voter Administration Office at 903-454-5467.
