City suing car wash over noise levels

GREENVILLE — The City of Greenville is planning to take legal action to reduce the noise coming from a car wash along Jack Finney Boulevard.

The City Council voted unanimously following an executive session Tuesday night to instruct City Attorney Daniel Ray to act against the business which has angered the residents of an adjacent neighborhood.

“They want me to file a suit in district court, which would require him to build dampening equipment or something else that would lower noise level from those blowers,” Ray said Thursday.

Several people approached the City Council earlier this month, complaining they have lived with the noise ever since the car wash opened about a year ago.

Ray said he had spoken with the owner of the car wash on multiple occasions, adding hundreds of complaints are received by the city about the noise every day, as the car wash and the blowers which are the problem operate from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily.

The city’s suit would claim the car wash is a public nuisance due to volume of the complaints received about the property.

In its motion, the Council indicated it was acting in the interests of the “health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Greenville” in directing Ray to file the suit.

Ray said the suit would ask the judge to set a date by which time the owner of the car wash would be required to install the measures.
