Veterans Vigil continues at A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE — For more than six decades, Texas A&M University-Commerce has conducted a ceremony in conjunction with Veterans Day, to pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces.

The legacy continues this week, with the 2013 Veterans Vigil.

The Vigil ceremony dates back to 1949, when the former Air Force ROTC unit on campus — at the time East Texas State Teachers College and later East Texas State University — established what became an annual tradition. After the ROTC unit was disbanded in 1991, a committee made up of community leaders, students, faculty and staff was formed to carry on the ceremony.

The 2013 Veterans Vigil, which this year will pay special tribute to disabled veterans, will begin with a reception at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Rayburn Student Center (RSC). The opening ceremony at 10 a.m., with Retired Naval Chief Petty Officer John Turner as the guest speaker, culminates in the lighting of the vigil flame.

The flame will remain lit until the closing ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
