Greenville residents should never have to worry about their firefighters not being strong enough to carry them out of a burning home.
Greenville Firefighter Greg Green recently competed in and won his seventh gold medal in a row at the 2013 Texas Firefighter Olympics.
Green took first place in the 198 pound division with a 545 pound squat, a 430 pound bench press and a dead lift of 605 pounds.
Although he took home the gold medal, this was not Green’s personal best at the competition. Green currently holds the bench press, dead lift and total record with 455 pounds, 630 pounds and 1,655 pounds, respectively.
The Garland native said he has been weightlifting on and off since high school, and has found ways to stay physically fit, including playing soccer and baseball at Garland and as a member of the Marine Corps Rugby Team while serving in Japan.
Heart attacks are the number one cause of deaths for firefighters, according to a study from the United States Fire Administration. Green said he keeps healthy to avoid that statistic.
“Fighting a fire in the middle of the night, coming out of a dead sleep is very hard on the body,” he said.
Another reason Green lifts is because he is the spokesperson for his online supplement company, Lockout Supplements.
“I own Lockout Supplements, so I have to look the part and live the part,” he said.
Since Green is a firefighter, and works 24-hour shifts, he has a different workout regiment than most powerlifters.
“I do a two-day on, one-day off split with two muscle groups, large and small,” he said, adding he has a revolving workout that included back and triceps one day, chest and biceps the next and legs and shoulders last. “It’s how I’ve been doing it for seven years.”
Green has worked for the Greenville Fire Department for nearly a year, and said the experience has been enjoyable.
“It’s been good. It’s been an easy transition for me,” he said. “It’s a lot more laid back than others.”
Many powerlifters have a favorite workout, one they feel they are able to really excel at.
Green said his is deadlifting.
“Dead lift is my favorite workout,” he said, adding that bench press and squat suits do not help when deadlifting. “It’s just you and the weight. It’s a true lift.”
Green has won 18 gold medals at the Firefighter Games in powerlifting and softball in his seven years competing in the Texas Firefighter Olympics.
