Triumphant Solar Team returns home

GREENVILLE — The Greenville High School Solar Team, which finished in second place in the 2013 Solar Car Challenge on July 30, will return to Greenville on Friday.

The solar car will be unloaded at Highland Terrace at 4 p.m., and then will receive a police escort down Highway 69 to Wesley Street. It will take a right on Wesley Street and then on Terrell Road before arriving at the high school. The team would enjoy as much support along the route, and especially at the high school parking lot, as possible.

The team completed the eight-day cross country race in Los Angeles Tuesday evening. The race began July 22 at Texas Motor Speedway.

The GHS solar team is made up of team captains Jake White and Jose Castaneda, as well as team members Press Alford, Rachel Rice, Ricky Steward, Phillip Malone, Devin Siems, Cain Marks, Geovanni Velazquez, Caleb Bryan, Tristan Swanzy and Tyler Behrens.

The Solar Car Challenge began in 1993 as a high school extracurricular activity, according to the SCC website. More than 65 schools in 20 states now take part in the challenge. The Solar Car Challenge is designed to motivate students in science, engineering and alternative energy.
