The Christmas season officially begins in downtown Greenville this week, with “Christmas on the Square” Thursday evening and the Downtown Christmas Parade Friday night.
— The Greenville Parks and Recreation Department is hosting Christmas on the Square, the 23rd annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hunt County Courthouse. The evening will include horse-drawn carriage rides, a performance from the Studio A Dance Company, cookie decorating with Collin Street Bakery, hot chocolate from Landon Winery, and pictures with Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick. Winners of the holiday coloring contest will also be announced. Christmas on the Square is sponsored by Collin Street Bakery, Dairy Queen, Crumpton TV and Cellular, Express Signs, Henington School Services, Hunt County, Landon Winery, Majestic 12, Red Lobster, Shenaniganz, Super 1 Foods, Tuscan Slice, and Wal-Mart.

— The Downtown Christmas Parade, with the theme “Songs of Christmas”, starts at 7 p.m. Friday. As has been the tradition, those parade watchers who line up early will be able to hear holiday tunes from the Phoenix School Choir, who will be performing in front of the Hunt County Courthouse. Staging for the parade will be on Jordan Street, with vehicles entering Jordan from Johnson Street, facing eastward. Staging will begin at 2 and conclude at 6 p.m. Judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. and plaques will be presented for the Grand Marshal’s Award (First place overall), Mayor’s Award (Second place overall), Theme Awards, Spirit of Christmas Awards and Automobile Awards.
The parade begins at the corner of Bois D’ Arc and Lee Streets, travels westward on Lee, south on Wright Street, east on Washington Street and finishes at Stonewall Street, turning south to exit downtown. Marching units, equestrian entries and all vehicles not legal for normal street traffic will continue east on Washington to Market Square. No entry fee is required to participate in the parade. All floats must have holiday lighting and all entrants must be pre-registered by Wednesday at www.ci.greenville.tx.us/parade.
