The Hunt County Commissioners Court intends this week to approve hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding for the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, the office of Hunt County Constable Precinct 1 Terry Jones and the Hunt County Jail, to pay for salary stipends and the purchase of vehicles and equipment.
Some of the funding is coming from monies seized as contraband connected to narcotics trafficking and forfeited to local law enforcement. For example, in November 2012 the sheriff’s office seized $280,000 in cash left inside abandoned luggage on a Greyhound Bus, stopped at the Shell Station on Interstate 30 West in Caddo Mills.
Nine items are included under the consent calendar portion of the commissioners regular session agenda, which begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Auxiliary Courtroom, 2700 Johnson Street in Greenville. Items listed under the consent calendar are considered to be routine by the commissioners and are enacted by one motion.
Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks is asking the commissioners to approve the assignment of $22,135.50 of recently awarded seizure funds to the “Salary Stipend” portion of the Crime Control budget, to be utilized for Certificate pay of peace officers who have earned higher levels of Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education certification; the assignment of $10,978.50 in seizure funds for the continuation of Cell Phone Stipends currently in place; the assignment of $25,185.50 of seizure funds to be utilized to supplement specialized personnel, contract K9 services and K9 mileage.
The commissioners are also set to approve the purchase of a 2014 Chevrolet Express 15 passenger van, at a total cost of $28,341.00, to be paid from the sheriff’s department commissary funds; as well as five 2014 Chevrolet Tahoes, at a total cost of $203,262.45, to be paid from the sheriff’s department equipment funds.
The sheriff’s office is also seeking approval for the purchase of two radio dispatch consoles and accessories, at a total cost of $31,950.00, to be paid from the sheriff’s department equipment funds; along with the purchase and installation of new carpet for the sheriff’s Communications Area, Communications Office and Training Area in the jail, at a total cost of $11,796.75, to be paid from the sheriff corrections other repair & maintenance fund; and the purchase of a dishwasher for the jail, at a total cost of $10,989.20, to be paid from sheriff’s department commissary funds.
Jones is asking the commissioners to approve the purchase two 2014 Chevrolet Tahoes, at a total cost of $50,866.00, to be paid from the Constable Precinct 1 equipment funds.
