Three charged with organized crime in copper thefts

GREENVILLE — Two  suspects arrested earlier this month on charges of engaging in organized crime, in connection with the reported theft of thousands of pounds of copper, remain in custody at the Hunt County Jail.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said Monday that three individuals were charged in connection with the thefts along County Road 2546 in the Union Valley area were from Quinlan, following a probe begun February 12 by the sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division.

“Upon following up on leads and the cooperation of Parks Recycling, two suspects were identified as Jimmy Lee Roy, 28, of Quinlan and Ryan Clyde Houston, 29 of Quinlan,” Meeks said. Interviews conducted with the pair revealed a third suspect, Holly Brown Cruz, 26 of Quinlan.

Meeks said the suspects are also believed to be involved in two cell tower thefts from August 2012.

Roy, Cruz and Houston are alleged to have sold almost 3,200 pounds of stolen copper, valued at nearly $10,000, between Aug. 1, 2012 and Feb. 28, 2013. Meeks said the thefts also resulted in thousands of dollars in damages.

The three suspects were taken into custody on March 14 and all were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. Houston was able to post bond, but  Roy and Cruz remained in custody as of Monday.

“I want to commend Investigator Kelly Phillips for all his hard work and effort in bringing these copper thieves to justice,” Meeks said. “Copper theft is big business as the numbers show here and we were able to take three persons off the streets and charge them with organized crime.”
