Receiving some armored protection

GREENVILLE — The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office tactical unit could receive some heavy duty assistance, if the Hunt County Commissioners Court approves a funds transfer.

The commissioners are scheduled to consider approving the use of $2,600  from the equipment line item of the Federal  Forfeiture Account to pay for the delivery of a 2012 Mine Resistant Vehicle. The item is included on the agenda for Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 10 a.m. inside the Auxiliary Courtroom, 2700 Johnson Street in Greenville.

“We’re not anticipating any mines or bombs,” said sheriff’s Captain/Acting Chief Deputy Nathan Ehrhart. “It’s an armored personnel carrier.”

Ehrhart said the vehicle would be used by the department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit.

“It is an armored vehicle for tactical operations,” Ehrhart said.

He explained the vehicle is being made available through the Department of Defense Excess Property Program, also known as the 1033 Program, which provides surplus military equipment to state and local law enforcement agencies for use in counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism operations. Ehrhart said the county is not buying the item.

“The $2,600 is what it costs to transfer it to here,” Ehrhart said, adding the vehicle’s primary use will be to provide for the officer’s safety in dangerous situations.

“We’re trying to make sure they are protected,” Ehrhart said. “This vehicle is going to be able to stop a round.”
